The Gypsum Association maintains evaluation reports issued by code bodies or jurisdictions, specifically the International Code Council (ICC Evaluation Service, Inc.), and the City of Los Angeles. These reports demonstrate code compliance and acceptance of specific gypsum materials and systems. In addition, this page allows you to access information about specific building code compliance issues that may arise from time to time.

ICC Evaluation Service, Inc.

ESR-1338 recognizes gypsum products for specific interior and exterior applications, and also recognizes various load-bearing and nonload-baring fire-resistance-rated wall, floor-ceiling, and roof-ceiling gypsum board assemblies. Some assemblies also provide sound transmission control.

Standard Building Code, published by Southern Building Code Congress International (SBCCI), Birmingham, AL

Section 701.5.2 of the 1999 Standard Building Code lists the “GA Fire Resistance Design Manual” as an accepted source of “. . . fire resistant materials, constructions and assemblies of constructions.” Section 2504.4.1 of the 1999 Standard Building Code lists “GA-216″ (Specification: Application and Finishing of Gypsum Board) as the reference standard to be followed in the application and finishing of gypsum board.

Uniform Building Code, published by International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO), Whittier, CAL

State of New York

§1250.3 of the New York State Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code (9 NYCRR Subtitle S) lists the Gypsum Association Fire Resistance Design Manual as Reference Standard RS5-2, one of the “reference standards applicable to State Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code”

South Florida Building Code

Section 3701.5 of the South Florida Building Code (Revised 1994) “Fire Resistive Materials and assemblies shall be installed in conformance with the tolerances, quality, and methods of construction as set forth in the … Gypsum Association Fire Resistance Design Manual GA-600 … ”

City of Chicago

Section 15-12-060 of the City of Chicago Building Code specifically recognizes the Gypsum Association Fire Resistance Design Manual as a source of materials and systems that “. . . shall be acceptable as meeting the requirements of this Code.”

City of Los Angeles

RR 23961 is based on ICC Evaluation Service, Inc. ESR-1338 and covers specific fire-resistance rated wall and ceiling systems.

City of New York

MEA and BSA numbers are NOT required for fire-resistance rated gypsum systems in the City of New York. The building code of the City of New York references the Gypsum Association Fire Resistance Design Manual as Reference Standard RS 5-1B for use in determining compliance with the Code.

National Fire Codes, published by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Quincy, MA

Paragraph 3-3.4.2 of NFPA 90A-1993, Installation of Air Conditioning and Ventilating Systems, 1993 Edition, requires that all “gypsum board systems shall be constructed in accordance with the Fire Resistance Design Manual.” Table A-1-2 of NFPA 96-1994, Ventilation Control and Fire Protection of Commercial Cooking Operations, 1994 Edition, states that “solid gypsum walls and partitions. … are described in the Fire Resistance Design Manual published by the Gypsum Association … ” Page 152 of the Life Safety Code Handbook, 5th Edition, makes reference to specific fire resistance rated systems published in the Fire Resistance Design Manual.
